Offered: March 15th, 2009 9-4pm
Location: Westside Permaculture Farm, Malibu, CA
Instructors: Joan Stevens, Taylor Arneson, Sean Jennings and special guests
Edible Forest Gardening is the conscious application of the principles of ecology to the design of home scale gardens that mimic forest ecosystem structure and function, but grow food, fuel, fiber, fodder fertilizer, "farmaceuticals," and fun.
This workshop will offer an overview exploration of forest ecology, site analysis and assessment, the design process, and interaction with some of the lesser known plants that can comprise 'perennial polycultures' in forested biomes.
We will begin the day with lecture. After lunch we will put theory into practice with hands on planting, mulching, and fertilizing accompanied by some Drumming. Drumming traditionally accompanies many planting parties in cultures across the world.
Topics will include:
History & Theory
Forest Ecology
Windbreak and micro-climate design
Plants for a LA Food Forest
Installation of a new Food Forest System
Care & maintenance of integrated ecologically abundant Food Forest systems
Participants will aquire working knowledge of Forest Garden Design for Southern California, and participate in a variety of hands-on activities such as outdoor observation, mapping, planting, sheet mulching and more.

Nestled on a beautiful ridge, the site features multiple water harvesting systems, solar power, production green house (coming soon), 3acres of developing forest gardens, native Oak Woodlands, ocean and mountain views, chickens, and two (soon to be 3) prolific vegetable gardens.
